While we have not reached our goal, we are pleased with our academic progress last year; with our elementary schools, middle school and high school all surpassing the state average growth on the 2007-2008 Commonwealth’s standardized tests released in September (Commonly known as the CATS Tests).
A quick review by school:
A.D. Owens Elementary realized a +5.3% increase in their accountability score - with an index of 83.3. Key areas of improvement were in reading (+4.9%), mathematics (+13.9%), social studies (+5.2%), practical living skills (+11.6%), writing portfolios (+5.0%) and on-demand writing (+16.4%).
Fourth Street Elementary demonstrated a +2.8% increase in their accountability score - with an index of 73.5. Key areas of improvement were in reading (+3.7%), mathematics (+18.6%), arts and humanities (+21.1%), and practical living skills (+24.3%).
Mildred Dean Elementary realized a -7.4% decline in their accountability score - with an index of 93.6. While the school saw no increases in any core academic areas, Mildred Dean is recognized as one of the top urban elementary schools in the Commonwealth.
Newport Middle School demonstrated a +2.5% increase in their accountability score - with an index of 70.1. Key areas of improvement were mathematics (+6.3%), science (+8.4%), social studies (+6.4%), practical living skills(+16.2%) and writing portfolios (+15.8%).
Newport High School realized a +3.7% increase in their accountability score - with an index of 67.3. Key areas of improvement were in reading (+9.8%), mathematics (+5.2%), practical living (+13.4%), writing portfolios (+10.4%) and on-demand writing (+39.3%).
